My weekend trip to hunt for fossils Edisto Beach State Park

I want to tell you about a weekend fossil hunting trip I took a few weeks ago. It was a cold, but sunny Saturday in December. I live about three and one half hours from the beach I was planning on visiting, so I started out rather early, about 4:30am. I was going to Edisto Beach State Park in South Carolina.

This was a trip I had been anticipating for quite some time. Because I live in South Carolina, most of my fossil hunting trips have been limited to the beaches of my state. I had not visited Edisto Beach before this. The majority of my trips have been to the beaches of Myrtle Beach and Hunting Island. I had read that Edisto Beach State Park was an excellent beach to hunt fossils so naturally I was eager to visit.

First, a little history about my fossil hunting. Some twenty years ago or so I was invited to go to the beach with an aunt. During the trip, Aunt Nita introduced me to hunting sharks teeth. Maybe I was a little young, but I did not enjoy this past time. Several years later, I was walking along the beach and happened to look down and see a sharks tooth. I reached to pick it up and suddenly remembered the excitement my Aunt Nita displayed upon finding a sharks tooth. I must have been about 20. That was 23 years ago. Today, I don't miss an opportunity to go fossil hunting.

This particular Saturday was before Christmas and the weather forecast was for a clear, day of sun and cold. I figured that would be the ideal time to hunt fossils. I was right! We arrived at 8:30 clock and bundled against the cold to protect us and began our expedition! I was really glad to see many shell beds up and down the coast! I have pictures on my site. We started walking towards the camp on the beach. There was nobody on the beach and soon we began to find shark teeth and some petrified wood. There was also a wealth ofshells some of which I couldn't pass up.

As the morning turned into afternoon, the temperature rose enough that we were able to shed our heavy coats and stocking hats. We were now beachcombing in light jackets under beautiful blue skies. By now, other people were coming to the beach, probably from the campground. We left the beach heading home about 3:30pm.

We had a great experience at Edisto. We found many fine specimens to add to our collection. I have had good luck finding sharks teeth and petrified wood at both Myrtle Beach and Hunting Island. Now I can add Edisto Beach State Park to my list of great beaches to find fossils.

We found 34 sharks teeth, numerous bits of petrified wood and an excellent vertebrae specimen. I was very happy with the days take and was already planning another trip. I have pictures of Edisto Beach and our finds at my website http://www.saturdayafternoonhobbies.com

Edisto Beach House

If you rent you're looking for a beach house in Edisto are polite company. Edisto Iceland and its beautiful coastline is home to hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, in search of a peaceful, friendly and relaxing atmosphere. And while "hundreds of thousands" as a lot of sound, a mile-long island and different than a mile wide and a season high of four months, Edisto "slow" compared to Hilton Head, Kiawah, Isle of Palms Myrtle or grandfather > Beach.

And while some might think the island is too slow for many, especially families, is just the place for a happy and safe holiday fun. On the site you can search for beautiful teeth, shells and see sharks, clay crafts, fish and crabs, or visit the Serpentarium camp or hike in a number of countries with low preserves and parks.

What options are available for hire

The most popular and in Edisto> Beach Rental. While most are in the hundreds line the banks of the walk around the sound and the Navy. Design ranges from "country" and a new bungalow, modern resort apartments with all the features you would expect in a resort high price.

Prices for houses on the beach (the beach I mean) season can be as low as $ 600/week off season for $ 5000-6000 per week during peak periods. It is very reasonably priced considering the prices comparableHomes on Kiawah or PIO.

The larger apartments can accommodate 2-3 families, you get $ 6,000 reduced to $ 2,000 per family. That works out to about $ 225 per night in a large modern house on the beach ... not bad ... not bad.

So basically, where it should be the mirror image of what kind of holiday you want to call. Frankly, I did not sleep in or traveled to almost every beach or resort, and rental and travel to the sea I remember most (and hadmore fun), where, with my family as a child and teenager. The huts on the beach were very cheap if not more fun that the "Palm Beach" case, where we had to look at what we did. E 'was much more fun if you relax ... could really relax.

But the great thing about Edisto Beach house rental is that you get a wide selection. Find love to visit and stick to it. After several years of rental will probably be able to special prizes from the beginningOwners and a few goodies you might expect.

Good luck!

Edisto Beach House Rental

If you're looking for an Edisto Beach house rental you're in fine company. Edisto Island and its beautiful shoreline hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year who are looking for a quiet, friendly and relaxed vacation. And while "hundreds of thousands" may sound like a lot, for an island that is several miles long and a mile wide and has a 4-month peak season, it makes Edisto "slow" compared to Hilton Head, Kiawah, Isle of Palms or the granddaddy Myrtle Beach.

And while some may think the island is too slow, for many, especially those with families, it's just the right place for a happy, fun and safe vacation. Locally you can search for beautiful sea shells and shark's teeth, attend clay crafts, fish and crab, visit the serpentarium or camp or hike in several of the low-country preserves and parks.

What Rental Options are Available

The most popular and in highest demand is the Edisto beach house rental. While most are in the interior, hundreds line the shore from the boardwalk area around to the sound and marina. Design ranges from "cottages" and bungalows to new, modern resorts homes with all the features you would expect in a high-priced resort.

Prices for beach houses (beach front I mean) can be as low as $600/week during off-season to as high as $5-6,000/week during peak season. These are very reasonable prices considering comparable prices of homes on IOP or Kiawah.

Also, the larger homes can accommodate 2-3 families, so $6,000 gets reduced to $2,000 per family. That works out to about $225 night in a large, modern beach front home...not bad...not bad at all.

So, basically where you choose should be a reflection of what type vacation you want. Honestly, I have stayed in or traveled to just about every type beach or resort out there, and the vacations and beach trips I remember the most (and had the most fun on) where the ones with my family as a young kid and teenager. The cheap beach shacks were as much if not more fun than the "Palm Beach" homes where we had to watch what we did. It was much more fun when we could relax...really relax.

But the great thing about Edisto beach house rentals is that you get a wide selection. Find one you love to visit and stick with it. After several years of rentals you will probably be able to get special pricing from the owners and a few treats might be awaiting you.

Good Luck!
