Trailer Or Motel? A Tough Choice

We bought a trailer here in Florida a couple of years ago and would like to do a little traveling with it. I can understand the advantages of camping with a trailer which is our sole activity with it thus far. We just continually discuss the pros and cons of road trips with a trailer verses just staying in motels. We live on a budget, we are not terribly tight, but we don't have endless resources to spend either.

We still have three children at home who are all teenagers. We love to travel and have often argued the merits of trailer versus motel for a more long distance trip. Bringing a trailer along would provide cheaper meals, uniform mattresses for a good nights sleep, a place to rest along the way, no hotel fees. On the other hand it would bring more expensive gas and slower travel. Road trips are traveled fairly quickly in a car with many of the interstate speed limits. Pull into a cheap motel at night and resume your trip in the morning.

But there is the hassle of packing and unpacking every morning, finding a restaurant and hotel and being comfortable. But on the other hand I love to eat at restaurants where someone else does the buying, prep work and clean up and I love room service and maid service in the motel. Back to square one. I think for us, shorter distances we will use the trailer and anything over about 4 or 5 hours we will motel it.
